I want to prevent the 'Brother Control Center' v2.3.1 (BCC) starting ever time I log into the non-administrator account on my machine. BCC even starts up every time I switch to the non-administrator account even if the user is already logged in and had previously quit BCC. The BCC application does not appear in the account's Login Items. When I log into the account I have to cancel the 'setup type configuration' and confirm, and then Quit from the menu bar. I can express a preference by unchecking the 'Start ControlCenter on computer startup' check box in the preferences, but this preference is not respected. This preference is how I stopped this application auto-starting on the administrator account. I have tried giving the troublesome non-admin account admin status temporarily while I change the above preference, but the pref is still not respected.

For the admin account, there exists the following directory: /Library/Preferences/Brother/ which contains two files: com.brother.ControlCenter.plist com.brother.twain.plist The first file contains the lines: PreferenceBoot 0 which is the relevant preference. This directory does not EXIST (and so nor do the files therein) for the non-admin account, and is not created when the account is given admin status temporarily and logged in. Click to expand.lsbom /Library/Receipts/BrotherTWAIN.pkg/Contents/Resources/BrotherTWAIN.bom shows where everything was installed, but the relevant parts are gleaned from the following: $ ls /Library/Printers/Brother/Utilities BrStatusMonitor.app/ DeviceSelector/ ControlCenter/ Server/ $ ls /Library/Printers/Brother/Utilities/ControlCenter/ ControlCenter.app/ $ ls /Library/Printers/Brother/Utilities/DeviceSelector/ DeviceSelector.app/ $ ls /Library/Printers/Brother/Utilities/Server LOGINserver.app/ NETserver.app/ USBserver.app/ I'm still lost.
Running BrotherTWAIN.pkg itself does not allow to uninstall,1 assuming that's what I want to do. I would be happier just to be able to turn off the auto-launch. 1 It only allows an 'upgrade', which I did not perform. Click to expand. Thanks for the reply Bill, but it doesn't appear in login items and never has. The question is how to stop something launching every time the user logs in or is switched into, when the application doesn't appear in the login items, won't allow the startup preference to be changed, doesn't appear in the launchd directory /System/Library/LaunchDaemons, and doesn't have a preference directory /Library/Preferences/Brother/ which in the other account contains com.brother.ControlCenter.plist.has a thought.
Okay, I solved the problem! I have found com.brother.ControlCenter.plist with the PreferenceBoot 0 lines and a few other lines in it, in the / directory. So I created /Library/Preferences/Brother, and moved the preference file to there.
And now it doesn't auto-start. It seems that since /Library/Preferences/Brother/ didn't exist, it wrote the preference file to / but nevertheless tried to read it from /Library/Preferences/Brother/. That's pretty broken. The application was installed by admin, so /Library/Preferences/Brother/ only existed for the admin user.
Thanks for the attempts to help me, especially from Chris Ridd.has a thought. Okay, I solved the problem! Hello, This message is a Hail Mary, the last thing I do before I format the laptop's hard drive, reinstall Windows 10 and all applications, and go to a bar. Setup: Windows 10 Pro x64 Brother MFC-L5800DW Here's the story: A week and a half ago, I setup a Brother MFC-L5800DW printer at a site. The only unusual thing about the install was the office had an Ethernet port that was not live.
I setup the printer wirelessly but remarked to the user it might be a little pokey sending scans. I wasn't sure. A few days later, the client calls me to say that they weren't able to scan and that they had someone come in to connect the Ethernet port. I would have preferred they let me know that scanning was an issue before they spent money having someone fix the Ethernet port, but not much I can do about that. I decided to go in, disable the WLAN on the Brother printer, enable the Ethernet port with the same static IP as the WLAN, and confirm printing and scanner work. This is where things went wrong.
After I switched the interfaces in the Brother printer, the Control Center software could no longer see the printer. I ran their little Network Connection Tool which identified 'a problem' and then reported that the 'problem' was 'fixed' but it actually did not fix anything. Pings to the printer worked so I know the printer was on the network and responding. Reboots of the printer and what not did not help. At this point, I search for a way to uninstall the Brother software. There is no entry in Programs and Features nor in the newer Windows 10 utility.
A KB article pointed me to a tool inside Brother's utilities. However, that did not uninstall everything. Another tool uninstall the WIA drivers for the printer and scanner.
Nevertheless, I ran those tools and reinstalled the software. Once done, ControlCenter showed two MFC-L5800DW and I'm having trouble getting the scanning profiles to save correctly. I call Brother (because.
I guess?) and it's clear the tech is used to dealing with people to whom the word 'download' is the same as 'install.' I try to follow his directions but it's clear he doesn't know of a way to completely remove the Brother utilities. He also doesn't know how I fix the issue of two printers showing up in ControlCenter. At this point, I'm getting pretty steamed because this is supposed to be so simple and yet here I am two hours later with the same problems. Eventually, I do what I've done in many instances in the past. I scour the registry and hard drive for references to Brother.
I find usual stuff, nothing out of the ordinary. (When I say I've done this before, I am not kidding. It's a method I've used to force a complete reinstall of the software dozens of times over the years.) Well. I should have guess this like everything else in this adventure, this too would fail.
The software wouldn't install at all throwing up various inscrutable errors like 'the parameter is incorrect.' The bottom line was many of the necessary utilities like the Scanner software and that ControlCenter didn't install properly. I made some registry backups, but not enough.
I didn't really try anything else here. I threw up my hands and ran a System Restore to a couple of days before I switched interfaces on the Brother. Unfortunately, I can't go back any farther than that.
Now the software is installed but doesn't launch. No window appears. The helpful Network Connection Tool shows a dialogue in which it wants me to type in the IP address of the printer, but I can't activate the field and type. I can click in it and select the IP address there, but I can't type. Control Center appears to launch but the window doesn't show up. (It may be off-screen.
I'll have to try to move it over.) Before I raze the system and build it back up from scratch, I wondered if anyone else had any ideas. Here's what I did: 1.
I ran two installers. One removed the WIA drivers. This uninstaller is available on Brother's website and and could be downloaded from Brother's website. The second I ran from the Brother Utilites. Once done, I removed all entries related to Brother in the Registry, taking care to make backups of every key I removed. I rebooted then reviewed the directories related to Brother, specially Program Files and Program Files (x86).
I didn't see anything left over. I did not venture into C: ProgramData. I downloaded a new copy of the installer from the website. I don't know if this was strictly necessary.
I did it just to remove any chances that I had done something to a previously downloaded installer since I had exploded the compressed copy and didn't keep that compressed copy around. Once I reinstalled, only one printer existed in Control Center and it could contact the MFP. I tested printing. I tested scanning.
It all worked. The next problem came up when I took the laptop from an office I was working in back to the office where the user sits. Suddenly Control Center couldn't talk to the MFP. I rebooted the computer. I switched the MFP back to Wifi the back to wired. As inexplicably as the connection was lost it came back.
My sense is this has more to do with networking inside the building than anything, but I don't really know. In any case, the laptop doesn't get much movement and I've left it that way. Regarding Revo. I have used that in the past and I had planned to try but since I made progress with this method, I didn't try to use it.
Thanks everyone. Let this be your cautious tale if you want to support a Brother MFP on Windows 10. For reference, I have found the solution to this problem in a forum on another site. In my case, the solution was that the following registry keys were missing on the client machine: Start/Run/Regedit/HKEY local machine/system/controlset001(002 or 003, and current controlset, check them all!!!)/control/print/monitors. I had to copy the key from each of these directories over from a working computer (export registry keys) to the client machine. I owe all accreditation of this solution to funk45 on the following website's forum: Thanks, JCTech35. Here's what I did: 1.
